Eurovision Song Contest.......and the winner is...

As soon as I found out that cakeyboi theme for this months Treat Petite is Eurovision, I just had to participate. My obvious choice of country is....Austria (the country hosting this years event and the country I was born in)....

There are so many different crescent shaped pastries in Austria. Sweet and savoury, covered with cheese, filled with cheese, filled with nuts, filled with ham, covered with sea salt and cumin,…made out of puff pastry, made out of a yeast dough….
Legend has it that the bakers of Vienna started to bake crescent shaped Kipferln, to celebrate defeating the Turks from invading Austria and as the symbol of the crescent moon was associated with the Turks it seemed suitable….
It is also said that even the croissant has its origins from that time and it was Marie Antoinette daughter of the Austrian empress Maria Theresia who married Louise XVI that introduced the Kipferl to France which led to the croissant.

Whenever I make a Brioche plait for the weekend, I always have to make double the amount of dough so Leia can make some bread too. She loves making animals with the dough this time her crocodile turned out particular good!!

British Sandwich Week - Its got to be an Ocean Bagel.....

Its British sandwich week and Leia and I have decided that our favourite sandwich is a tuna bagel.

We don't eat meat but once or twice a month we will have either a little tuna or salmon. Don't ask me why?! I stared to eat a little fish when I was pregnant and it kind of stuck. Maybe my body is telling me it needs the fish oil?!

Anyway back to British sandwich week... there were so many contenders, cheese and pickle, egg and cress......but in the end we decided the tuna bagel was worthy of our vote...

Chocolate Biscuit Scones with Vanilla Glaze and chopped Pecans

When we visited the USA last, we decided to stop by a coffee shop for a caffeine boost before braving the shops and attractions again. I ordered a scone with my coffee only to discover that my scone actually tasted more like a biscuit than a scone....uahhh,... how strange!....After a few bites and the odd hidden dunk, I decided that I liked them. In fact I decided I liked them rather a lot...I had a few more during our stay - just to make sure!?!......
When we returned home, I tried all sorts of recipes and eventually after several tweaks and re-bakes I think I actually got quite close....

A Picnic Pastry Challenge - Rustic Snake

My inspiration for this pie came from a recipe of an Moroccan Almond Snake Cake that I found a little while ago. I love the Moroccan sweet flavours that make up the cake...Almonds, rose water, puff looked really pretty and I thought it would be ideal for the summer.

Last month I stumbled upon Jen's Food blog and her monthly pastry challenge and thought it would be great fun to participate. This months theme is Picnic. If you would like to read more about it or even better participate then you can find Jen's blog here and her co host here at United Cakedom.

So, as I was thinking about what I would like to take on a picnic that involves pastry, I thought of the snake cake. The only issue I had was that it just felt too delicate for a picnic! Then I had the idea of making the sweet cake into a kind of savoury rustic pie version.....
